Susannah is Associate Professor in Environment and Development in the School of Earth and Environment, Deputy Director of the Centre for Global Development and an active member of Africa College. Susannah has academic training in both the natural and social sciences. She works in interdisciplinary ways to understand opportunities and challenges of achieving sustainable development with the aim to directly inform environment and development policy and action. Her research specifically sets out to better understand the relationships between social and economic development, land use change (e.g. agricultural development and deforestation), environmental degradation and conservation in developing country contexts. Recent research has investigated the impacts of conservation and development initiatives and climate change on rural livelihoods and well-being in Africa. She has significant experience working in East & Southern Africa, and some experience conducting research in Bangladesh and South East Asia.
